A retreat can tell a public story. In Taquaras, Hercílio Luz’s former country residence brings together the governor’s life, architecture from the early twentieth century and the landscape of Rancho Queimado.
From residence to heritage site
Hercílio Luz acquired the building in 1911 for leisure and rest. According to the municipal portal, the house was expanded to include a two-story annex and an attic, while retaining features of the original construction. In 1985, the house and its grounds were acquired by the state government and given protected heritage status. The national MuseusBr registry also records 1985 as the year the museum opened.
What to notice in the building
The exposed bricks, balcony and eaves details are highlighted in the municipal description. Notice how the different heights and roof forms shape the façade. Looking closely at the house’s form offers a starting point for discussing construction techniques, the uses of its rooms and changes made over time. It is an exploration that can begin even before you step inside.
The house is part of Taquaras
The museum is at Rua Paulo Sell, 428, in the district of Taquaras, according to the Brazilian Institute of Museums registry. Its presence makes it possible to plan an outing that connects heritage with everyday life: visit a cultural space, explore the surroundings and leave time for a stop at the district’s businesses. The house gains more context when seen as part of this place.
Plan a cultural visit
To visit, consult the Fundação Catarinense de Cultura channel and confirm opening hours, access conditions and group arrangements. Historical tourism listings should not be your only reference when choosing a time. If you are visiting with children, a simple idea is to invite them to notice materials, doors and windows, while following the staff’s guidance and respecting restricted areas. For school groups, arrange the visit and any educational activities in advance.
